Standing Out in a Highly Competitive Field

Everyone knows what a popular TEDx talk can do for a person’s career. Unsurprisingly, then, there are countless services targeted towards people looking to sharpen their public speaking skills. Our client’s services—particularly its focus on community—are a cut above the rest, but in a relentlessly competitive market these selling points were tough to communicate. Our task, then, was not so different from the company’s task vis-a-vis its clients. We needed to hone its narrative and forcefully express what exactly made the company unique, in order to cut through the noise and guarantee that anyone looking for public speaking training would at least consider our client’s services.

The problem was that, at least from a link-building perspective, solar panels are almost too cutting-edge for their own good. For general-interest technology sites, the subject was arguably too niche. And while there exist plenty of smaller websites dedicated to solar panel technology, these websites mostly lacked audiences large enough to move the needle for our client. It was a Goldilocks problem—finding the websites that were just the right fit for our client’s needs.

Making the Most Out of a Limited Budget

While SEO was obviously important to the company—they wouldn’t have contacted Sure Oak if it wasn’t—they were not then in a position to spend lavishly on their SEO efforts. Of course, a successful SEO campaign doesn’t necessarily require a massive expenditure—but making do with less can still be a challenge. If Sure Oak was going to help the client stick out from the crowd, we were going to have to get creative, converting limited resources into tangible, month-by-month growth.

Limited Prior SEO and Link-Building Efforts

These problems were compounded by the fact that, before starting with Sure Oak, the client’s SEO and link-building efforts had been limited to non-existent: for many crucial keywords, the client didn’t rank at all. In a sense, then, we’d be starting from scratch, with a limited budget, in a highly competitive field. It was a daunting challenge—but we were confident in taking it on.

Solution

The first thing we did was put our heads together to come up with keywords we thought would best contribute to the client’s success. Keyword-generation is both an art and a science: you’re looking for keywords that are both highly relevant to what your client’s customers will be searching for, while also not being so competitive that landing on the first page of results would be impossible.

Next came link-building. As mentioned, we were working with a limited budget here: while Sure Oak does often conduct massive link-building campaigns, our efforts here would by necessity have to be more targeted, laser-focused on yielding the highest results from just a handful of pages. That meant working closely with the client to identify potentially high-yield pages: pages that would simultaneously send the right signals to the search engines while at the same time significantly boosting the client’s traffic.

That limited budget also meant that we couldn’t focus on optimizing every single one of the client’s pages—instead, we concentrated our efforts on the pages with the highest likelihood of generating a conversion.

Results

The results were precisely as we’d hoped. In the space of just six months, organic traffic to the client’s domain has nearly tripled, from 654 to 1,953.

Organic Traffic

Meanwhile, keyword growth was even more impressive: the client now ranks on the third page for “public speaking coach”—a highly competitive keyword with over 1200 searches a month—and in the fourth position for “Ted Talk Presentation Guidelines” (having started all the way back at 94!).

Organic Traffic to Targeted Pages

And our decision to make the most of a limited budget by focusing on a select few pages has paid off handsomely as well: traffic to one important page has increased by a magnitude of 5X, while another has more than doubled and yet another has nearly tripled.

Organic Traffic to Ted Talk Prep Page

About the Public Speaking Coaching Company

The TEDx-style talk is its own unique art form, and mastering its conventions can bring significant rewards—from regular paid speaking gigs to book deals and beyond. Of course, mastering those conventions is far from easy—which is where our client comes in. Over the years this public speaking coaching company has helped hundreds of people in the worlds of business and entrepreneurship hone the skills required to effectively deliver moving, engaging, and thought-provoking public speeches.

In part, they do this by enlisting actual current and former TEDx speakers to impart the tricks of the trade to their clients. These TEDx veterans—along with the company’s regular staff—walk would-be speakers through every stage of the process. They help aspiring speakers to locate their own unique stories—the stories that only they are equipped to tell—and then help them shape those stories in such a way that they’ll cut through the noise and make a meaningful impact on a wide audience. Once the speaker’s talk is online—whether through TEDx or a different channel—they show the speaker how to leverage it to build their brand, grow their audience, and generate monetizable opportunities.

But perhaps the most important thing this client offers is community: members receive access to an exclusive app and platform where they can talk through the challenges of public speaking, and every single week they’re granted the opportunity to practice in front of their peers.

Challenges

An Industry in Perpetual Flux

Few industries change at a faster rate than cybersecurity. It’s built into the field: solutions that work one year might be outmoded by the next, as cybercriminals refine their methods, seek out new vulnerabilities, and force leaders in the cybersecurity field to rapidly seek out new defensive measures. Accordingly, any external agency that works with a cybersecurity company has to get used to changing at the same pace. Where SEO for a mattress or menswear startup might stay relatively stable over time, cybersecurity SEO requires constant, intensive research—you need to stay vigilantly on top of the conversation and maintain a deep understanding of what exactly IT departments are worried about and what exactly they’re searching for, solutions-wise. To properly service our client, we would have to be willing to jettison old approaches if and when they stopped working and to quickly formulate new ones.

An Ultra-Competitive Market

The relentless increase in cybercrime ushered in by the pandemic has been terrible for affected businesses—but it has also, inevitably, led to a boom in cybersecurity solutions. There are, right now, more cybersecurity products on the market than ever: any IT buyer seeking the right solution for their company will find themselves inundated with potential options, and trying to figure out what distinguishes one from another can feel impossible. Our client’s offerings really are unique, but differentiating their service in a crowded marketplace—and conveying their value-add to IT buyers—was among our most pressing challenges.

Implementing a Full-Court SEO Plan

Sometimes, we’ll work with a client who only wants help with one aspect of their SEO—say, a more robust back-linking campaign or better-optimized website content. This client, by contrast, was after the full range of our services, from content development to link-building and beyond. Developing a 360-degree SEO game plan wouldn’t be easy—but we felt more than up to the task.

Solution

Part of the fun of working in SEO is immersing yourself in a brand new field—learning its special codes, its jargon, its ins and outs. And as mentioned, if we were going to help this client, we were effectively going to need to become cybersecurity experts. So, that was the first step here: immersing ourselves in everything having to do with cybersecurity and getting a system in place whereby, day by day and week by week, we could stay on top of developments and shift strategy accordingly. Of course, this required an unusually close degree of collaboration between Sure Oak and the client’s marketing department.Once all that was in place—once we’d mastered the material and developed collaboration protocols with the client’s team—we set about conducting an SEO Game Plan. That meant, first, taking a deep dive into the competition, and developing a firm grasp of what our client offered that they didn’t. It also meant running a technical audit, researching their current backlink profile, etc.

From there, the next step was determining where the client’s team needed us most, and then kicking off an ongoing SEO program. For three years now, we have helped the client with things like on-page optimization, content development, strategic link-building, tracking and measurement, conversion rate optimization, SEO campaign management, and more. Again: no one strategy has stayed stable for long. In the world of cybersecurity, you have to think on your feet. But all that hard work has paid off.

Results

In the last year alone, following focused efforts on the part of Sure Oak, organic sessions for targeted pages have increased dramatically. ‘Application Penetration Testing’ for instance—a crucial page—has seen an increase of 522.8%, while the client’s ‘Threat Modeling’ page has seen a staggering increase of 1,525%.

Organic Traffic

That’s an extremely significant increase in the B2B world because—assuming you’ve got an adequate SEO program in place—it’s also a reliable indicator of increased conversions. And indeed, that has very much been the case for our client—in the very same time period under discussion, our client’s conversion rate more than doubled, from 0.56% to 1.16%.

About the Cybersecurity Company

This client—a leader in the cybersecurity space—takes an aggressive approach to perimeter defense: it focuses on prevention, not reaction. In an unprecedentedly dangerous threat landscape, with ransomware and other attacks on a continual rise, this client grants its customers a rare peace of mind by illuminating their entire external attack perimeter—ensuring that they’re not operating in the dark. Potential threats are made visible long before they can become a serious problem, and active threats can be flagged and promptly dealt with.

Where many cybersecurity companies have automated almost every aspect of their business, our client is distinguished by its human touch: it employs a dedicated team of ethical white-hat hackers who continually test customers’ systems for vulnerabilities, which can then be flagged and promptly remediated. Meanwhile, instead of overwhelming customers with a never-ending stream of warnings (99% of them, inevitably, false positives) our client’s tools surface only high-risk vulnerabilities. The classic “boy who cried wolf” syndrome—all too familiar from other cybersecurity solutions, which flood IT departments with hundreds of notifications per day—is here eliminated, allowing IT personnel to focus on the things that actually matter.

Challenges

Great Word of Mouth—But Limited Organic Traffic

At the time SureOak started working with the client, they had no trouble with word-of-mouth sign-ups: seemingly everyone who used the service recommended it to a friend or colleague at a different company. Among HR professionals, their reputation was sterling. But you can’t build a business on word-of-mouth buzz alone, and this is where our expertise came in. Put simply: the client needed more organic traffic and leads. They needed to ensure that when HR decision makers at SMBs went hunting for an all-in-one HR service, theirs was one of the first companies that showed up. This would be one of our biggest challenges.

Limited On-Site Content Offerings

For most of its history, the client had given limited attention to the actual content on its pages: they were (understandably!) more focused on optimizing their services and providing the best in HR solutions for their clients. But if they wanted to increase conversion rates on their site—a persistent problem—they would need to totally revamp their content offerings. Essentially every aspect of their website required overhauling at the time SureOak started working with them—from their content strategy to their individual service pages. Getting these into shape would be a major lift.

Website In Need of a Redesign

When we began work with the client, their website was, at best, functional. The relevant information was there, but it was sometimes hard to find, and its overall design left something to be desired. Again: our client is among the best in the business when it comes to HR solutions. But in the world of SEO—which is to say, the world of business—an incredible product can only get you so far: it needs to be packaged properly, too. Redesigning their website and branding would accordingly become central to SureOak’s overall SEO and marketing strategy for the client.

Solution

We started simple, with the basic building blocks of any digital awareness campaign: SEO, link building, and content creation.

On the SEO end, we put our heads down to find just the right keywords to focus on—ones for which our client would have a realistic chance of rising in the rankings—and then worked relentlessly to optimize the client’s website for those terms.

Then we came to the link building. Link building, of course, is one of the most reliable tools out there for building a client’s credibility and increasing its visibility in the search rankings—it sends unignorable signals to Google that your company is known, respected, and worth boosting. Leveraging our relationships with prominent HR and workplace websites—and working proactively to develop new ones—we quickly undertook a robust link building campaign for the client.

But the content was crucial here, too. Given the range of services offered by our client—from payroll to recruitment to employee lifecycle management—the range of potential content was almost unlimited. The blog we helped the client build out was precision-engineered to attract HR decision-makers, providing lengthy and genuinely informative explainers on evergreen HR topics. At one and the same time it increased their authority in the space and significantly increased the range of daily visitors to their website.

We might’ve ended there, but things were going so well that the client wound up expanding our remit—to the point that we wound up not just redesigning their entire website but also updating their branding and even their UX and navigation. What had once been a bit diffuse and disorganized became, after our renovation, sparklingly clean—everything in its right place, just waiting to be found by the right HR rep.

Results

The results were better than we could have hoped. In the space of just two years, the number of organic users—the main metric the client had been concerned with—increased by 88%, while organic sessions increased by 72%.

Meanwhile, for keywords ranking in the top 3, the client saw a staggering 164% increase, and a 157% increase in total keywords ranking.

Keywords Ranking in Top 3

And just as we’d hoped, our website redesign led potential customers to spend much more time on the site—average pages per session increased by 82%, significantly increasing the chances of conversion.

Time Spent on Site

About the HR & Payroll SaaS Company

This client—a well-known all-in-one HR solutions company—offers everything and does it all well. They give their all to each component of their modern HR setup, from payroll to benefits administration to time tracking to recruitment and beyond.

Many things distinguish them from their competition, but two are worth flagging here. The first is their niche: they’ve carved out an enviable reputation for themselves in a coveted market segment, namely medium-sized companies with one to five hundred employees. The second is their unusual commitment to customer service: while their technology can be easily spun up without dedicated technical knowledge, the company’s representatives also work directly with their customers to create custom conversion schedules, unique training plans, and more. Their staff is perennially on hand to make sure their customers get the most out of their product.
